Photography

Lillian’s photography work began in the mid 2000’s. Following her move to Long Island's North Fork she began focusing more on activism, believing art was in her past. An initial interest in nature photography allowed her to find a way of combining art with environmental activism, something that has informed her work ever since.

Lillian began photographing Sarus cranes during her 2015 trip to Nepal for the preservation of the Lumbini Crane Sanctuary. This series of photographs is a “visual ode” to the Sanctuary’s unique environment, highlighting the importance of its preservation. It also calls to attention the various threats the Sarus face, both to their natural habitat and for the cranes being captured and held in captivity in nearby monasteries. The name of the series originated from local concerns that overdevelopment would turn the Crane Sanctuary into a “Buddhist Disneyland.”
